The Game Plan - Viking Cues Tip of the Week with Mike Roque, Author of "Build Your Game"

The Game Plan

“When you have a strategy, you’re more comfortable.”

-Fred Couples

IF YOU’RE TRYING to catch a crocodile, you need a good strategy—a game plan. Without it, you’re literally dead in the water! With a good eight ball or nine ball pattern, each shot leads to the next in a series of planned moves. Without shot planning, you’re simply not going to run very many racks.

A definite plan removes doubt and builds confidence. It puts your mind at ease allowing you to shoot without hesitation.

More importantly, the plan provides a picture of how to run the table, and pictures put you in feel mode. Once the plan is set, you can think less and put your focus on execution.

Having a plan is essential before you start. However, don’t be a slave to it. If you get out of line and the layout no longer works with your initial plan, change it. Create a new plan.

Don’t be stubborn about this. Ninety–nine percent of the time it doesn’t work to force a pattern, especially if it makes you feel uncomfortable.

Keep in mind, if you change your game plan, you need to let go of the old one. Don’t get caught in negative thoughts about unsuccessful execution. Let it go. Commit to the new plan and you’ll be more relaxed and win more games.

Always start with a game plan, but change it if it’s not working!

When you focus on a small target, you have a better chance of hitting it.
