OPTIMUM INTENSITY

“Mentally I try to stay at a medium level, not too high or too low.”
-Todd Zeile

Every athlete has a level of intensity where they feel best competing. It’s largely mental, but at the higher levels, adrenaline comes into play. Football players need a high intensity, while pool players work best between three and six on a scale of one to ten.

Identify your own natural level and strive to maintain it whenever you compete.

When you drop below your optimal level, you can become overly casual, depicted by sloppy and erratic play. If your intensity is too high, there’s a tendency to try too hard and tighten up.

This is where you force the action instead of allowing it to happen naturally. You are pumped, but not in stroke.

When you find yourself playing exceptionally well, take note of your intensity level. It’s important because you do have control over it. If you think of your intensity as a thermostat, you can turn it up or down to suite the current situation.

Be on the lookout for any signs during a match where your optimal intensity might be off. Then adjust your thermostat to the level you need to play your best pool!
