A Good Stance

“The goals of a good stance are stability, consistent sighting and a simple swing.”

-Bob Jewett

YOUR STANCE is the core of your foundation. It provides steady support for your body and your swing.

There are several different schools of thought on stance. Some players distribute their weight equally between both legs. Others put more weight on their front foot while others put it on their back foot. Most have at least some weight on their bridge hand.

There are both legs bent, both legs straight and the classic front leg bent with the back leg straight. There are great players with every stance, however, some stances require a little more effort. Standing for hours with both legs bent is fine for a few games, but playing all day in a long tournament can take its toll.

Experiment with a variety of stances, but whatever you decide on, it’s a good idea to keep your bridging arm straight. That gives you at least one constant.

Make sure you can sight the cue ball and object ball shot easily, and leave enough room between your stroking arm and your body. Other than that, your stance is personal.

Find a stance that provides comfort and stability.
