The Zone

“When I’m in the zone…I’m in a cocoon of concentration.”

-Tony Jacklin

When you are in the zone, it’s a state where your mind and body are working together in perfect sync.

Your cue stick is an extension of your arm with perfect control over speed and stroke. The ball drops into the pocket and the cue ball stops exactly where you planned. Everything is on cruise control. Missing never even enters your mind.

When you arrive there, the game appears very simple. It only takes a quick glance at the table, and you know how to proceed. A mental image of the desired outcome is all you need to set up the shot.

Concentration and focus are automatic and the whole process requires little effort. You just line it up, get down, and shoot.

Part of what is happening is that the conscious mind freely takes the backseat and allows the subconscious mind to lead. Execution is a physical event and the conscious mind cannot direct the body that efficiently. It is not designed to control that many variables. The nervous system is simply too complex.

But the subconscious can take you there. And that place is pure magic. When you experience this state, just go with the flow. Ride the wave of pure joy and ecstasy for as long as it lasts.
