POCKET SELECTION

“Use the best pocket for the shot at hand, no matter how off beat.” -Phil Capelle

To simplify positional play, it’s important to consider the table layout and the best pocket for each ball. In many cases that will be the closest pocket, but not always. Ideally, the best choices are ones that offer excellent cue ball control with a high level of confidence in pocketing the ball.

When you start your runout, identify the obvious pockets for each ball. Decide how you want to get on the game ball and work backwards to find your runout pattern.

By connecting the dots you will see a clear roadmap outlining how each and every ball will be played.

Of course, you’ll need to reevaluate the table after each shot. If the cue ball comes to rest in an awkward position, or a ball gets moved, you may need to rethink the table layout and find a new pattern.

There are times when it makes sense to play position for a longer shot. It may take the risk of disturbing balls out of play, or it may give you a guaranteed stop shot position.

Always be aware of the closest pocket, but make it a habit to consider all of them. A slightly longer shot within your skill level gives you more options. Take the shot that simplifies the runout.

Keep your pocket options open.
Choose the high percentage one.
