FOCUS

“The best players, know when it is slipping away.”
-Howard Vickery

The major key to winning is the ability to focus. It’s easy to say, but hard to do. Yet without 100% focus, winning remains a dangling carrot.

We hear it all the time, “I lost my focus.” But what is it and how do we get it? And, if it’s so elusive, how do we practice it?

Being able to focus is the act of bringing certain details front and center. We’ve all seen photographs where the subject is perfectly sharp, but the background is out of focus. Do this with each shot. Keep the shot clear and blur out any distractions. Do not allow your mind to wander.

Use your senses, feel the cloth, hear the balls click, and watch the cue ball come to rest where you planned. Your senses are all about the here and now, and they are a friendly gateway to staying in the present moment.

When you make a mistake, it is natural to be frustrated. But let it go quickly, regain your focus, and get prepared for your next opportunity.

Put a rubber band on your wrist and snap it when you notice your focus is slipping away. Use the sound and feel to “snap” your attention back to the present moment and the task at hand.

Stay focused and pay attention.
Keep your mind on the task at hand.
