Don't Beat Yourself

“I have found billiards to be a philosophy of self-control.”

-Willie Hoppe

In the heat of battle there is only you and your game. When it’s your turn, your physical action and mental attitude are completely under your control. Nothing can stop you except yourself, and that is often what happens.

Besides an opponent sitting and watching you, there is another opponent—inside of you. He is also watching, questioning your decisions, and providing steady chatter, some of which can interfere with your performance.

If you want to perform at your highest potential, you have to know how to quiet your mind. Experts believe that the human brain can have up to 60,000 thoughts in a day. That’s about 42 thoughts every minute. You have to clear this chatter as well as any doubts and self–defeating thoughts.

Affirm that you are the master of your attitude and actions. Remind yourself that you are well prepared and that you trust your training.

Use detailed visuals and have positive expectations. These direct your body to produce the results you want. They help you stay in the present and keep your attention focused on what needs to be done. Don’t beat yourself, beat your opponent!

The pros have a secret; keep your tip on the cue ball.
