Align Your Chin

“Do your aiming and lock your chin in line before you get down on the shot.”

-Jerry Briesath

PROESSIONAL PLAYERS do a large part of their aiming well before they get down on the shot. From a standing position, the view offers an excellent opportunity to visualize the entire shot. Using your chin as a guide for good alignment is one of the secrets to coming down into the shot correctly.

While standing, align your chin with the cue ball as it sits on the shot line. As you go down onto the shot, keep the shaft under your chin, on the shot line, and aligned with your cue ball target.

If you naturally shoot right or left eye dominant, the shaft could be slightly to one side of your chin. That’s okay; it’s the relationship between the balls and your eyes that needs to be consistent.

Once your bridge hand is on the table, you’ll be close to if not perfectly aligned. As you settle into your stance, keep your chin in line between the cue ball and the contact point on the object ball.

Every player develops a personal feel for this process, and minor adjustments can be made. However, the principle is simple; start aiming while you’re standing. This method of alignment will assist you in pocketing more balls with more consistency.

Align your chin while standing, before you get down on the shot.
